Discovering Sumba: A Spiritual Connection with the Land, Horses, and the Villagers
There’s something truly magical about Sumba. From the moment I arrived on this island, I felt a deep, spiritual connection that resonated through every step I took. The land, the horses, and the people—all seemed to be calling me to experience something greater than what words can describe.
Sumba, located in the eastern part of Indonesia, is a land untouched by time. The island an hour south of Bali flying and very close to Australia, is rich in ancient traditions and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. The mountains, the beaches, the rivers—all of it speaks to a hidden beauty that few will ever understand unless they are truly open to its energies. I found myself drawn to the horses, which seem to embody the spirit of the land itself, offering me a connection that went beyond anything I had ever experienced before.
The indigenous villagers of Sumba have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, and their connection with horses is spiritual. Horses are not just animals to them—they are an integral part of their traditions and beliefs. They believe that the horses help carry the souls of the deceased to the afterlife, a profound reminder of the sacred role these animals play in their lives. I found myself deeply moved by this sacred relationship.
At NIHI Resort, I experienced the transformative power of horses — that was more than just riding; it was about connecting deeply with the horses, and through them, with the land itself. Each encounter with the horses felt like a sacred ritual, connecting with parts of myself I hadn’t even known were there. The horses’ calm presence allowed me to be present, to truly feel and listen to my inner voice.
The villagers, too, play an essential role in this spiritual journey. They aren’t just workers—they are the stewards of the land and the keepers of its traditions. Their deep knowledge and respect for the horses and the island’s culture filled each experience with authenticity. Through their guidance, I learned to see the horses not just as animals, but as spiritual beings, mirrors reflecting my inner state and helping me heal.
The island itself, with its wild beauty and ancient culture, was a profound reminder of how much we can learn from nature when we allow ourselves to be open. It’s not a place of distractions or superficial experiences. It’s a place where you can reconnect with your true self, and with the land that has been alive with wisdom for centuries.
I’ll always carry the memory of my time in Sumba with me. The bond I formed with the horses, the deep respect I felt for the villagers, and the spiritual connection to the island are things that will stay with me forever. Sumba is not just a destination—it’s a spiritual journey, and I feel incredibly blessed to have experienced it.
This island, its horses, and its people have transformed me. It’s a place where healing happens through the land itself, through the ancient wisdom of the villagers, and through the deep, unspoken bond between humans and horses. Sumba will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to return one day to continue my journey of healing and self-discovery.
